Peter Clare - Tax Expert and Accountant Leicestershire
Born in Leigh-On-Sea in 1942, Peter left school in 1958 and became a Clerical Assistant with the Inland Revenue. He became an Inspector of Taxes in 1968, being promoted again and then spent two years training Tax Inspectors under the new Investigation Rules that came into force in 1975.
Following that he spent four years as District Inspector in Bognor Regis and was promoted to Senior District Inspector of Leicester 3 District in 1981 with a team of over 60 staff working under him.
After 26 years he left the Inland Revenue in 1984 citing that it had become too impersonal and that he thought it was not hitting the right targets.
Since then he has spent several years advising Chartered Accountants on Tax matters until he decided to advise the public directly through Mr.Tax which is now one of the largest accountancy practices in the UK with over 1500 clients under Peter's direct supervision.
Married with a wife and one daughter who also work within the business, Peter was a Class 1 Football referee and in a career of 19 years came across and booked the likes of Jimmy Greaves and sent off Mike Gatting. As a Tax Inspector and Referee he was a doubly hated man as he recalls in his after dinner speaking engagements. He has spoken to Insurance Company Executives, Accountants, Businessmen and Independent Financial Advisors where the common consensus is that collecting tax was rarely seen as being so interesting.
Peter strongly identifies with the burden of the small businessman and is a member of the Leicester Branch of the Federation of Small Businesses. Describing his work at Mr.Tax as Poacher turned Gamekeeper, although it may be more appropriate to think of him as the David against the Goliath, Peter assures you a confidential, efficient service and a personal commitment to your cause.
Whether the dispute relates to a technical matter or a full tax investigation, Peter will be there fighting your case alongside you.
Peter has published books offering tax advice. You can download one of his books that covers practical advice on tax problems now .
I have represented many taxpayers at the General Commissioners for Income Tax with a high level of success both in investigation work and appeals against imposed penalties for late filing of documents as well as technical matters such as the rejection by HMR&C of claims to relief or allowable deductions against profit.
I have also dealt with many VAT investigations and been involved in many Missing Trader cases. I have been instructed twice to represent traders at Tribunal hearings and won both.
I worked on and was a witness in the High Court case of Charlton & Others versus CIR.
I work investigation cases every day of my working life and have a record of not only settling them speedily but have achieved high savings on the HMR&C proposals. I not only work “District” cases but many cases handled by Special Civil Investigations and Civil Investigation of fraud.
